ICHI-GO ICHI-E: Once-in-a-lifetime encounter
SEASONS: Seasonal Poetry in Shodō
A Meditative Calligraphy Workshop Inspired by Nature
Seasons is a Japanese calligraphy workshop taught by Aoi Yamaguchi that explores the beauty of nature and the transitions of the seasons as expressed through poetry. In this unique hands-on experience, participants will be introduced to classic Japanese haiku featuring a kigo (seasonal word) selected for the month, followed by a meditative hands-on calligraphy.
In March,「春燈」(Shun-tō)—meaning Spring Light—is one of the poetic kigo that spark imaginations. On a warm spring evening, the gentle glow of light evokes a sense of nostalgia: the soft illumination from homes, lanterns beneath eaves, or streetlights along a river, all shimmering through the spring haze with quiet elegance. Inspired by selected classic haiku centered on Spring Light, participants will write「春燈」(Shun-tō) in their choice of calligraphic style.
Through a meditative calligraphy process, participants will learn and practice the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy (Shodō), cultivating balance between mind and body. The instructor will cover essential techniques, including proper use of the brush and materials, correct posture, an introduction to Japanese paper and sumi ink, and basic calligraphy strokes. Participants will then practice writing the chosen kigo「春燈」on hanshi paper, drawing inspiration from the haiku presented during the session. Participants will take home their calligraphy artworks on hanshi paper, along with printed handouts for continued reflection and practice.
This workshop is designed for adult beginners. No prior calligraphy experience or knowledge of Japanese is required.
