永遠(とわ)なる言葉を編み
咏いつづける場所。
Atelier Towa is the studio of Japanese calligrapher Aoi Yamaguchi, located in Los Angeles, California. Born in Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi studied calligraphy at the age of 6 under the master Zuiho Sato. She is a recipient of numerous awards including the First Place prize from the Minister of Education at 44th Asahi Calligraphy Nationwide School Exhibit, Superior First Place at 33rd National Students Calligraphy Exhibition and others that are known as the supreme prizes at competitive public exhibitions, and received the title of Master Calligraphy Student from International Japanese Calligraphy Association at the age of 14.
She moved to the United States, San Francisco Bay Area in 2004 with an ambition to bridge cultures between Japan and overseas. She established her studio Atelier Towa in 2014 in Berkeley, California, where she created one-of-a-kind calligraphy art for various clients, worked on numerous large-scale live calligraphy performances, offered calligraphy workshops and curated calligraphy supplies for students. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2020, and opened the door of her new studio in West Adams district in December 2024.
咏遠 (towa) is a made-up word consisting of 咏 (to read a poem) and 遠 (faraway), inspired by the existing word 永遠 (towa) for "eternity". The artist hopes that the studio to remain as a place where the beautiful poems are woven infinitely, and where we can share the beauty, depth, and joy of calligraphy art with people from around the world.
